The purpose of this website is to provide an up-to-date inventory of the Culicidae (mosquitoes) of the world that includes taxonomic information based on the Principle of the First Reviser (International Code of Zoological Nomenclature Article 24.2). The contents of the site will be developed in genus-group units and updated as new taxonomic acts and formal descriptions of taxa are published. Major changes in the classification of the family are likely to result as phylogenetic studies based on morphological and DNA sequence data uncover previously unrecognized monophyletic groups. The aim is to establish a natural classification (rather than intuitively constructed groups) predictive of biological traits and ecological characteristics that are relevant to addressing issues of scientific and public health importance. The target audience for this information includes taxonomists, entomologists, vector control and public health workers, and anyone interested in the systematics and biological diversity of mosquitoes.
