The basal subdivision of the maxilla. In adult mosquitoes, imbedded in the membrane near the posterior tentorial pit; fused anteriorly with the rod-like stipes to form the stipitocardinal rod; distinguishable from the stipes by muscle insertions. In larval Diptera, a small usually rod-shaped sclerite articulating with the lateralia (see hypostomal sclerite).
