Mesozoic, Cretaceous, Turonian to Cenomanian (89.3-99.6 Mya), perhaps to Late Albian (≈100 Mya).

Type data: 

Holotype ♀, near Tanai, Kachin Province, Myanmar (Burmese amber).

Note: 

Burmaculex antiquus is the oldest fossil mosquito. It is the only culicid that has a short proboscis (about one-third the length of the antennae) and lacks scales (except on the posterior margin of the wing) (Borkent & Grimaldi, 2004).
