Priscoculex burmanicus Poinar, Zavortink & Brown, 2019

98.79 ± 0.62 Mya, Mesozoic, Early Upper Cretaceous, Cenomanian.

Poinar amber collection, Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon, USA.

The genus Priscoculex is classified within the subfamily Anophelinae based on the predominance of anopheline characters exhibited by this fossil species. However, some traits of the species, such as the setaceous proboscis and maxillary palpi, and the long setae on the veins of the wings, are not characteristics of extant anophelines and are deemed to be ancestral features.
