Definition:

The posterior area of a notum separated from the scutum by the scutoscutellar suture. In Diptera, differentiated only in the mesothorax, hence the scutellum in this order conventionally means the mesoscutellum. In mosquitoes, a transverse lobe that is trilobed in the Culicinae, except Toxorhynchites.
