In culicine and certain chaoborid larvae, the dorsally located, elongate sclerotised tube (incompletely developed in early instars) of abdominal segment VIII; bearing the spiracular apparatus at its apex; structurally comprising parts of embryonic abdominal segments VIII and IX; at least partly homologous with the pecten plate and U-shaped band of anopheline larvae.
