In mosquito and certain other dipterous larvae, a five-lobed valvular structure (including the spiracular apodeme or equivalent) encompassing the postabdominal spiracles; structurally comprising parts of embryonic abdominal segments VIII and IX; borne at the apex of a siphon in culicine and certain other nematocerous larvae; highly modified in Mansonia and Coquillettidia larvae for piercing plant tissues.
