Definition:

In many endopterygotous larvae, any one of the one to several paired lateral ocellus-like light-perceptive organs of the lateralia; composed of a few large optic elements unlike the ommatidia of compound eyes. In mosquito larvae, one consisting of five elements occurs somewhat posteroventral to each compound eye; persisting into the pupa and adult.
