The second or intermediate division (tagma) of the insect body; bearing the true legs and wings in adults; comprised of the pro-, meso- and metathoracic segments. The three segments are fused in mosquito larvae, but are distinguished by series of bilaterally paired, circumferentially arranged setae. In mosquito pupae, the head abuts the thorax, and the combined head and thorax are referred to as the cephalothorax.
